Matěj Blümel

Blümel, Matěj

Position : RW/LW

31-05-2000 Tábor, CZE

Youth team / club formateur : HC Pardubice

His father Petr Blümel, also a software developer, was one of the most famous Czech linesmen. He was chosen for four World Championships finals (2003, 2004, 2009, 2012). He also refereed his own son when Matěj was a junior, and couldn't refrain from blaming him for not skating enough.
Matěj is a shifty skater with short strides who puts a lot of effort to get speed. Dangerous player in short-handed situations.
Difficult player to defend against with his breakaway speed and inside-out moves.
He can handle the physical hurdles to go to the net and battles hard along the boards. His wrist shot has a quick release.
He finished high school in the USA while playing for Waterloo Black Hawks (USHL) between 2017 and 2019.
Drafted in the NHL by Edmonton Oilers in 2019 when he was supposed to join the University of Connecticut to develop slowly.
He eventually went back to Pardubice and attended university in the Czech Republic.
He played his first pro year on the fourth line in bottom-placed Pardubice but had a breakout second season.
He was called on the national team in February 2021 and kept his spot all the way to crack the World Championship roster.
