Began skating at age two at his home in Edmonton and first played organised hockey at age six. His hockey hero growing up was Steve Yzerman.
Big sized and very durable defenseman. Not physical enough given his size. Not very vocal in the dressing room.
Really good skater and adept at joining the rush. Smart and a capable shutdown defender.
Voted as the best defenseman at the 2003 World Championships and was also selected to the All-Star team.
In February 2020 he suffered a cardiac emergency during a NHL game between St. Louis and Anaheim. The game was interrupted.
In the next days he underwent a surgery to place an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).
He couldn't play again and announced his retirement in January 2021.

Il a commencé à patiner chez lui à Edmonton à deux ans et a commencé le hockey en club à six. Son héros de jeunesse était Steve Yzerman.
Défenseur de grande taille et très constant. Pas assez physique pour son gabarit. Pas très expressif dans le vestiaire.
Patineur vraiment bon et adepte des percées offensives. Futé et compétent pour empêcher de marquer.
Désigné meilleur défenseur des Mondiaux en 2003 et également élu dans l'équipe-type.
En février 2020, il a fait un malaise cardiaque sur le banc lors d'un match NHL entre Saint-Louis et Anaheim, alors interrompu.
Un défribillateur a été utilisé pour le ranimer. Il a ensuite été opéré pour lui implanter un défibrillateur automatique.
Il n'a pas rejoué par la suite et a officialisé sa retraite en janvier 2021.
