Born in Nový Jičín, but moved to Ostrava as a little kid. There he began playing ice hockey at the age of six. Became a member of Banik Ostrava at the age of nine, but soon played for TJ Vítkovice.
Strong two-way player with low gravity and solid balance on his skate. Very fast and energetic player with a "running style" when accelerating. Nicknamed "Čert" (Devil).
One of few players who scored a hat-trick against the Soviets, a feat he managed to do at the 1978 World Championships on home ice in Prague. Czechoslovakia won the game 6-4.
Had a brief NHL-career. Quebec Nordiques initially had his rights in 1980. Signed a two-year contract with Detroit Red Wings in July 1984, but only played one season, scoring his first goal against Montreal Canadiens on November 6, 1984. Played a total of 559 career games, scoring 630 (329+301) points. Retired in 1988.
His daughter married ex-NHLer and Czech international Pavel Kubina. Later worked for the Czech Ice Hockey Federation as a General Manager.
Inducted into the Czech Hockey Hall of Fame.
In later years it was revealed that he was worked as a confidant for StB, the plainclothes secret (political) police. They served as an intelligence and counter-intelligence agency, dealing with any activity that could possibly be considered anti-state or western influence. His cover name was “Čert”.

Né à Nový Jičín, il déménage très vite avec sa famille à Ostrava et commence à y jouer au hockey dès ses six ans. S'inscrit au Banik Ostrava à neuf ans avant de rejoindre le TJ Vítkovice.
Joueur polyvalent au centre de gravité très bas et solide sur ses appuis. Joueur rapide et énergique, si facile sur ses patins qu'il donnait l'impression de courir. Surnommé "Čert" (le diable).
Un des rares joueurs à avoir inscrit le coup du chapeau contre les Soviétiques, exploit réalisé lors de la victoire des Tchécoslovaques par 6-4 contre l'URSS aux Mondiaux de Prague 1978.
Connut un bref passage par la NHL après que les Nordiques de Québec ont acquis ses droits en 1980. En fin de compte, il signa deux ans avec les Red Wings en juillet 1984 mais ne disputa qu'une seule saison à Detroit. Il inscrivit son premier but nord-américain contre les Canadiens en novembre suivant. 559 matches en carrière, pour 630 points (329+301). Prit sa retraite en 1988. Intégra le corps des cadres de la fédération tchèque.
Sa fille a épousé l'international tchèque Pavel Kubina.
9 points marqués (5+4) en 49 parties de saison régulière de NHL. Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey tchécoslovaque.
Il fut ensuite révélé qu'il travaillait comme informateur pour StB, la police politique secrète qui servait d'agence d'espionnage. Son nom de code était "Čert".
