Grew up in the Muirhouse area of Edinburgh. Made his senior league debut one month past his 14th birthday.
Very intelligent player and a good skater in his prime. Dubbed the Wayne Gretzky of British ice hockey. Very similar in playing style to old British international Bert Smith.
First ever British born and trained player to get drafted in the NHL (1986 by Edmonton Oilers). He was drafted after the advice from Gary Unger, an ex NHL’er who had played against Hand the season before. Attended one training camp with Edmonton.
In 2004 he was the recipent of the MBE (Member of the order of the British Empire) from the Queen for services to Ice Hockey.
Had most league assists 15 times and most league points 9 times. In the playoffs he had most league goals one time, most assists six times and most points four times.
Was voted as the best forward in Pool D 1989 and 1990, as well as Pool C 1992. One of few players to play in the WC, WCB, WCC and WCD.
Announced his retirement on March 13, 2015 after having scored more than 4800 points in over 1800 games, an astonishing number.

Il a grandi à Muirhouse, un quartier d'Édimbourg. Il a fait ses débuts en équipe première à 14 ans et 1 mois.
Joueur très intelligent et bon patineur dans ses meilleures années. Surnommé le Wayne Gretzky du hockey britannique. Très similaire par le style de jeu à l'ex-international britannique Bert Smith.
Premier joueur formé en Grande-Bretagne à être drafté en NHL (en 1986). Les Edmonton Oilers l'ont drafté sur conseil de Gary Unger, ancien joueur de NHL qui avait affronté Hand la saison précédente. Il a assisté à un camp d'entraînement avec Edmonton.
En 2004 il a reçu un MBE (Membre de l'ordre de l'Empire Britannique) de la Reine pour services rendus au hockey sur glace.
Meilleur passeur du championnat 15 fois et meilleur marqueur 9 fois. En playoffs il a été une fois meilleur buteur, 6 fois meilleur passeur et 4 fois meilleur marqueur.
Il a été élu meilleur attaquant du Mondial D en 1989 et 1990, et du Mondial C en 1992. Un des rares joueurs à avoir joué dans les quatre divisions des championnats du monde.
Il a annoncé sa retraite le 13 mars 2015 après avoir marqué plus de 4800 points en plus de 1800 matches, des chiffres ahurissants.
