Brought to Daugava ice arena by his father at six. Joined Saga Riga at 12 and played along Roberts Bukarts in the best youth team in the country.
He was a very thin boy but was one the best runners in Saga, whose coach Gunārs Krastiņš (once trained by Viktor Tikhonov) was one of the few coaches in Latvia to value off-ice training.
Looked up to Evgeny Malkin and Pavel Datsyuk. Liked to improvise. Good size and hands. Dangerous in front of the goal.
Average defensively and not the best skater around, especially in the first few strides.

Son père l'a amené à patinoire Daugava à 6 ans. Il a rejoint le Saga Riga à 12 ans et a joué aux côtés de Roberts Bukarts dans la meilleure équipe de jeunes du pays.
C'était un adolescent très maigre mais c'était aussi un des meilleurs à la course au Saga, dont l'entraîneur Gunārs Krastiņš (qui a eu Viktor Tikhonov pour coach) était l'un des rares en Lettonie à promouvoir l'entraînement hors glace, notamment en faisant courir ses joueurs, mais en les traitant sans paroles méchantes contrairement à ses collègues.
Inspiré par Evgeny Malkin et Pavel Datsyuk. Bon gabarit - qu'il utilise peu - et de bonnes mains. Joueur dangereux devant la cage.
Moyen défensivement et pas le meilleur patineur, surtout dans les premières foulées.
