Also a good football player as a junior. Said that he finally chose ice hockey in the end because he was so well received by his older teammates. Played a total of 416 games for Vålerenga IF, scoring 440 goals.
In 1990 and 1991 he commented Norway's games on the radio along Ernst Lersveen before coming back with national team. Retired in 1994. Became a hockey coach. Coached the Norwegian National Team for fifteen years.

Divisé entre le football et le hockey durant ses années de junior, deux sports pour lesquels il était aussi doué. Opta finalement pour la glace car il y reçut un bien meilleur accueil de la part de ses équipiers. Tout le monde put se réjouir de ce choix puisque Roy Johansen inscrira 440 buts en 416 matches de championnat norvégien (principalement avec Vålerenga IF).
En 1990 et 1991 il commentait les matches de l'équipe de Norvège à la radio aux côtés d'Ernst Lersveen avant de faire lui-même son retour dans la sélection nationale jusqu'à sa retraite en 1994. Après quatre années réussies comme coach de Vålerenga (champion 1998, 1999 et 2001), Il a pris pendant quinze ans en mains (2001-2016) la sélection norvégienne, qu'il a installée en élite et amenée deux fois aux JO. Redevenu entraîneur de Vålerenga ensuite.
