His family originated from Saarbrücken in Germany. Born in Santa Domenica (today Rossa). Made his debut on the HC Davos second team as a 15-year old in 1928. In 1930 he moved to Zürich and played there for Zürcher SC. Formed the dangerous 'Er-line" together with Heini Lohrer and his brother Charly Kessler. Played 198 league games with ZSC. Represented Switzerland 75 times between 1933 and 1942. Retired in 1946.
Before the war he worked with stocks in a Zürich bank. Became an international referee in the 1940s. Also in charge of the Swiss Olympic team in 1956. Moved back to Davos for health reasons and operated a small bed and breakfast hotel in Davos.

Descend de citoyens de Sarrebruck, dans le nord-ouest de l'Allemagne. Né à Santa Domenica (aujourd'hui incorporé à la commune de Rossa). Débute avec la réserve du HC Davos en 1928, à 15 ans. Deux ans plus tard, il rejoint Zurich et le ZSC. Là-bas, il compose le fameux trio "Er-Sturm" avec Heini Lohrer et son frère Charly Kessler. 198 matches de championnat avec le ZSC, 75 sélections avec la Nati entre 1933 et 1942, arrête de jouer quatre ans plus tard.
Employé de banque avant la guerre, il sera arbitre international dans les années 1940 et mènera la délégation olympique suisse aux Jeux olympiques d'hiver 1956. De santé fragile, il retourne s'installer à Davos où il tiendra un petit hôtel jusqu'à son décès précoce, à 53 ans.
