Dmitri Khristich

Khristich, Dmitri Ivanovich ("Dima")

Position : RW

23-07-1969 Kiev (Kyiv), URS (UKR)

Youth team / club formateur : Sokil Kyiv

Decently sized winger with a quick and accurate shot. Superior hand-eye coordination and was very dangerous on powerplays where he usually stood near the right post and either deflected or poked in rebounds. Often went for the upper corners with his hard wrist shot. Had a long powerful stride and was always a scoring threat down low. Deceptively fast and played with a calm economical style. Also capable of playing as a center.
First Ukrainian to play in the NHL in December 1990 (with permission from Ukrainian federation when Soviet Union was about to be dismantled). He was amazed when he found out one of his teammates in Washington spoke Ukrainian: Peter Bondra.
In his second year in North America, he met his future wife Erin, who was the manager of the building where he rent an apartment.
His 1998-born son was named Kai because of The Snow Queen, which was "only" an Andersen fairy tale and not yet a Disney movie.
He got an American passport, which enabled him to have his parents and his brother move to Philadelphia (a city with Russian immigrants).
He only came back twice in his native Kyiv during the 1990s. He was unsure he had the right to play with Ukraine though he kept his old Soviet passport. He finally did it late in his career.
Retired in 2004. Was part of a group of several NHL players (Berard, Norström, Woolley, Stumpel, Peca and Murray) who were scammed out of several million dollars over the span of a decade.
NHL totals: 811-259-337-596
