Born and raised by his German-speaking parents in Citice, Czechoslovakia, playing for Banik Sokolov. Moved with his family to Landshut, West Germany in 1968.
Regarded as the greatest German player together with Gustav Jaenecke. Set many records during his years. Almost unstoppable at 6'5" (197cm) and 220 pounds (97kg). Offered a contract by NY Rangers in the 1970s. Also invited by Vancouver Canucks to their training camp in 1974.
Scored an astonishing 1431 (724+707) league points in 774 games, collecting 1110 PIM’s. Had a total of 1559 points in 878 career games. Represented West Germany 211 times (131 goals). All-Star at the 1974 Pool B WC. Retired in 1989. Went on to coach. Also served as the vice president of the German Ice Hockey Federation.
Is in the German and IIHF Hockey Hall of Fame. Father of Tom Kühnhackl.

Né dans une famille germanophone installée à Citice, en Bohême. Il commence le hockey au Banik Sokolov et reçoit donc une éducation hockeyistique tchécoslovaque, qu'il apporte en RFA quand ses parents s'installent en 1968 à Landshut, Bavière.
Inarrêtable par les défenses de Bundesliga avec sa technique et sa carrure de porte de garage (1,97m, 97kg), il inscrira le total impressionnant de 1431 points (724+707) en 774 matches officiels, tout en récoltant 1110 minutes de geôle. 211 sélections en équipe de RFA pour 131 buts, élu dans l'équipe-type du Mondial B 1974. Kühnhackl est considéré comme le meilleur joueur de son pays avec Gustav Jaenecke.
Reçut une offre de contrat des Rangers dans les années 70 et fut également convié à un camp d'entraînement des Canucks en 1974.
Devenu entraîneur après sa retraite de joueur en 1989. Également vice-président de la DEB.
Introduit au Hall of Fame de l'IIHF et du hockey allemand. Père de Tom Kühnhackl.
