Older brother of Edgars Kulda. Born in East Germany as his father who was an officer in the Soviet army was stationed there. His hockey hero growing up was Rob Blake, later on he also admired Aleksandr Ovechkin.
A defensive defenseman with a strong physical play. Strong skater and good hitter. Fine shot from the point. Good pass. Often used on powerplays. Below average positionally with tendencies to lose his man.
Drafted in the NHL by Atlanta Thrashers 2006 and played in the NHL for Atlanta and Winnipeg. Also played in Russia, Finland, Czech Republic and China.
Retired from national team... just before Latvia won his first ever medal in 2023.

Frère aîné d'Edgars Kulda. Fils d'un militaire soviétique en poste en RDA au moment de sa naissance, il prendra pour modèle sur glace Rob Blake, même s'il a ensuite aussi admiré Aleksandr Ovechkin.
Défenseur défensif au style sans concession, patineur et solide dans les duels. Bon slap en supériorité numérique, bonne qualité de passe. Son positionement moyen lui fait parfois perdre le marquage de son adversaire.
Drafté par les défunts Thrashers en 2006, il passe sept ans en Amérique du nord et dispute quelques matches en NHL avec Atlanta et Winnipeg. Revenu en Europe en 2012, il va se balader en KHL et jouera ainsi en Russie, en Finlande et en Chine (Kunlun). Plus une pige au Sparta Prague.

Il a pris sa retraite internationale... juste avant que la Lettonie ne remporte sa première médaille mondiale en 2023.
