Right-shooting defenceman with good puck skills and passing. He has decent size (186 cm) but average muscular strength.
Still he can divert opposing forwards to the boards thanks to good position play and strong footwork.
His three-year-older brother Christian Maier also grew up in Klagenfurt but played for Netherlands national junior team.
David went to Sweden at 15, spent three years in Södertälje and two years in Canada (OHL) before coming back to Klagenfurt.
He was considered a promising talent but struggled to get a spot in KAC. He mainly played in reserve team the first year and was lent to Linz at the beggining of the second season. When he was called back he was sometimes used as a forward to help out.
A few months later, though, he cemented his spot and had a solid first World Championship tournament.

Défenseur tirant de la droite, doué avec le palet et à la relance. De taille correcte (186 cm) mais avec une force musculaire moyenne.
Il sait toutefois conduire les attaquants adverses dans les bandes grâce à son bon positionnement et à son effort de patinage.
Son frère aîné de trois ans, Christian Maier, a aussi grandi à Klagenfurt mais a été international junior de hockey sur glace pour les Pays-Bas.
David est parti en Suède à 15 ans et a passé trois saisons à Södertälje et deux au Canada (OHL) avant de rentrer à Klagenfurt.
Ses débuts dans le hockey senior ont été difficiles. Il était considéré comme un talent prometteur mais a peiné à se faire une place au KAC. Il a principalement joué en équipe-réserve la première année et a été prêté à Linz au début de la saison suivante. Une fois rappelé à Klagenfurt, il jouait les utilités en étant parfois aligné en attaque.
Quelques mois plus tard, pourtant, il devint titulaire et connut un solide premier championnat du monde.
