First emerged playing for Toronto Upper Canada College between 1937 and 1941.
He continued playing in Toronto except for a brief appearance in Halifax during WW II while serving as a Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy.
Played for Toronto Barkers (TOHL) before joining the Canadian Olympic team in 1948.
He was added to the RCAF Flyers just ten days before the team set sail for Europe and was named the captain.
As it turned out Mara was a key player throughout the Olympics for the Canadians.
He was a very shifty and dangerous player who had contract offers from the NHL (Detroit and New York Rangers), but turned them down.
Attended New York Rangers training camp 1946 and later also tried out for Toronto Maple Leafs.
In civilian life George Mara was very wealthy and worked as an agent for George E. Mara Manufacturers of Toronto, a very successful liquor firm operated by his family.
His final season was 1948/1949, when he played seven games with the Montreal Royals of the Québec Senior Hockey League.
In later years he served as an executive on the board for the Maple Leaf Gardens (1957-1969).
In the early 1970s he sold the liquor firm and moved to the Jannock Corporation, a holding company (vice-chairman).
In 1976 he was made a member of the Order of Canada.
Passed away as a result of complications from heart surgery.

Il fit son apparition comme joueur au Toronto Upper Canada College entre 1937 et 1941.
Il joua à Toronto hormis une brève apparition à Halifax pendant la Seconde guerre mondiale où il était lieutenant dans la Marine Royale Canadienne.
Membre des Barkers de Toronto (TOHL) avant de rejoindre la sélection canadienne olympique en 1948.
Il fut ajouté au RCAF Flyers dix jours seulement avant le voyage en Europe et fut pourtant nommé capitaine.
Mara a été un joueur-clé durant le tournoi olympique pour les Canadiens. Joueur doué et dangereux, il refusa des offres de contrat dans la NHL (Detroit et New York Rangers).
Il prit tout de même part au camp d'entraînement des Rangers de New York en 1946 et fit plus tard un essai chez les Maple Leafs de Toronto.
Dans la vie civile, George Mara était très riche et travaillait comme agent pour la George E. Mara Manufacturers of Toronto, la prolifique entreprise familiale d'alcools.
Sa dernière saison fut 1948/1949, où il joua sept matchs pour les Royals de Montréal dans la Ligue de Hockey Senior du Québec.
Il fut ensuite un des membres de la direction des Maple Leaf Gardens (1957-1969).
Au début des années 1970, il a vendu l'entreprise familiale pour rejoindre la Jannock Corporation, une société de holding financier dont il devint vice-président.
En 1976 il fut fait chevalier de l'Ordre du Canada.
Décédé de complications après une opération cardiaque.
