Many sources have him born in Tokyo, but he was born in Tomakomai.
Murakami started playing hockey in third grade with Toyokawa elementary school, then joined Keikoku junior high school, also in Tomakomai.
He captained Tomakomai Higashi Senior high school from 1986 toin 1989. In high school he was the star and captained his team.
Top scorer in the Kanto University league where he played for Meiji University.
After graduating from Meiji University Faculty of Law in 1993, earning a law Degree, Murakami played outside of Japan for several seasons in order to improve his hockey skills.
He spent two seasons in the Czech Republic (1993/94 and 1999/2000), as well as Sweden (2000/2001) and United States (2000/2001).
In many regards Murakami felt as much European as Japanese, as he liked the European lifestyle.
In the Czech Republic he was nicknamed "Mirecek", winning a league bronze with Kladno 1994.
He participated in the first Japanese (JIHL) All-Star game in 2002, scoring a goal and one assist in the game.
He retired from hockey in 2002. The following year, he became a school teacher.
In 2011 Murakami completed the master's program at Hokkaido University of Education (Master of Education).
After working at Nishi high school in Kushiro, he was teaching high school students as a hockey club director for 12 years at Gangnam High School (also in Kushiro), retiring in 2019.

Beaucoup de sources le disent natif de Tokyo, mais il est en fait né à Tomakomai où il a grandi.
Murakami a commencé le hockey à sa troisième année scolaire à l'école élémentaire Toyokawa avant de passer au collège Keihoku en 1983.
De 1986 à 1989 il était la star et le capitaine de l'équipe du lycée Higashi, toujours à Tomakomai.
Meilleur marqueur du championnat universitaire Kanto alors qu'il jouait pour l'Université Meiji.
Après son diplôme de la faculté de droit de l'Université Meiji en 1993, Murakami a décidé de jouer à l'étranger pour améliorer son hockey.
Il a joué deux saisons en République Tchèque (1993/94 et 1999/2000), plus une entre la Suède (2000/2001) et les États-Unis.
Beaucoup considéraient Murakami plus comme aussi européen que japonais, car il aimait le mode de vie européen.
En République Tchèque il était surnommé "Mirecek", et a terminé troisième du championnat avec Kladno en 1994.
Il a participé au premier match des étoiles du championnat japonais (JIHL) en 2002, il a marqué un but et délivré une passe dans ce match.
Il a arrêté de jouer en 2002 et est devenu professeur des écoles la saison suivante.
En 2011 Murakami a terminé un master en éducation à l'Université d'Hokkaido pour l'Éducation.
Après avoir travaillé au lycée Nishi à Kushiro, il dirigea le club de hockey du lycée Gangnam (également à Kushiro) pendant 12 ans, s'arrêtant en 2019.
