Smooth skater without outstanding offensive skills. From a young age he showed an ability to make all the little things with and without the puck: wall plays, smart positioning and intense pressure. Developed into a shot-blocking penalty killing specialist.
Left at 17 to Canada Major Junior hockey and was drafted in the NHL by the Pittsburgh Penguins a few months later.
Finished his junior years with a Memorial Cup win with the Saint John Sea Dogs.

Patineur fluide sans talent offensif exceptionnel, il a démontré sa précocité à un très jeune âge dans le jeu sans palet, que ce soit pour des écrans, un positionnement intelligent ou son effort intense au pressing et dans les duels. Il s'est spécialisé en infériorité numérique en n'hésitant pas à se sacrifier pour bloquer les tirs.
Parti à 17 ans au Canada (au Drakkar de Baie-Comeau en LHJMQ), il est drafté en NHL par Pittsburgh quelques mois plus tard.
Il boucle son parcours junior en remportant la Coupe Memorial avec les Sea Dogs de Saint-Jean.
