Drake was born in the USA when his father Norm played for the IHL Fort Wayne Komets. He followed him in Germany a few months later and learnt ice hockey there at a early age, until his father retired when he was 8. Then the family settled in New Minas, Nova Scotia.
His uncle Dennis Vial also played for the Ottawa Senators as an enforcer.
He was only 163 cm at 16 but grew late and was already 191 cm three years later.
Excellent skater with good hands. Good hockey IQ and great work rate.
Extremely talented sniper. The more confidence he gains in the NHL, the more he shoots at the net.

Né aux États-Unis quand son père Norm jouait pour les Fort Wayne Komets, il l'a suivi en Allemagne quelques mois plus tard. Il y appris très tôt le hockey sur glace, jusqu'à la retraite de son père quand il avait 8 ans. La famille est alors retournée dans son État d'origine (la Nouvelle-Écosse) en s'installant à New Minas.
L'oncle de Drake, Dennis Vial, avait déjà joué pour les Sénateurs d'Ottawa, où il faisait office de bagarreur.
Drake ne faisait que 163 cm à 16 ans mais a grandi tardivement pour mesurer 191 cm trois ans plus tard.
Excellent patineur avec de bonnes mains. Intelligent et travailleur.
Tireur d'élite extrêmement talentueux. En prenant confiance dans la LNH, il tire davantage au filet.
