Was born in Eagles Mere, PA but grew up in Harrisburg, PA. Played high school hockey for Kent School Lions in Connecticut. Later a Yale graduate. He could play both as a defenseman and forward.
Always had a basic interest in physical fitness and subscribed to the old theory of a sound mind in a sound body. Retired after the 1932 Olympics.
Began his business career with General Foods in New York City as a salesman before being transferred by General Foods to Chicago where he continued to work for the company until 1935 when he became vice president of sales for Soybean Products Co., a startup company.
In 1943, he enlisted in the Navy and became an air intelligence officer. He served on the aircraft carriers USS Card in the Atlantic and the USS Wasp in the Pacific. It was during the raids on Okinawa in 1944 that he received the Purple Heart for a shrapnel wound he sustained when the Wasp was hit by a Japanese kamikaze.
For his involvement in this action, he was also awarded a Bronze Star. Rose to the rank of lieutenant commander. After the war, he formed a venture capital investment partnership called Bent, McBride & Thorne, and was active there until 1963 when he became chairman of the Hartford Plaza Bank.
He was president of the board of trustees of St. Luke's Hospital in the 1950s. In 1956, he negotiated the merger of two Chicago hospitals, St. Luke's and Presbyterian, and endowed a chair for a surgery department there in 1992. Became board president for the combined hospital in 1956.
Also president of the board of trustees of the Shedd Aquarium from 1969 to 1981. Although very proud of his accomplishments on the ice he was very modest about it and never mentioned it to friends.
He supported athletes and in 1967 spearheaded a fundraising effort to help sponsor American athletes in the 1968 Olympic Games, raising more than $30,000. Played tennis after his retirement until having a bypass operation.
Passed away of natural causes at the respectable age of 95 and is buried at Lake Forest cemetery.

Il est né Eagles Mere, PA mais a grandi à Harrisburg, PA. Il a joué au hockey au lycée pour la Kent School Lions dans le Connecticut. Plus tard il fut diplômé de Yale. Il pouvait jouer à la fois défenseur ou attaquant.
Il a toujours porté un grand intérêt à la condition physique et s'inscrivait dans la théorie ancienne de l'esprit sain dans un corps sain. Retraité après les jeux olympiques de 1932.

Après la guerre, il a formé un partenariat pour les risques sur les capitaux appelé Bent, McBride & Thorne, et il y fut actif jusqu'en 1963 quand il devint président de la banque Hartford Plaza.
Il était président du conseil d'administration de l'hôpital St. Luke's durant les années 1950. En 1956, il négocia la fusion de deux hôpitaux à Chicago, St. Luke's et Presbyterian, qu'il dotera d'un département de chirurgie en 1992. Il devint le président du conseil d'administration de l'hôpital fusionné en 1956.
Egalement président du conseil d'administration du Shedd Aquarium de 1969 à 1981. Bien que très fier de ses performances sur la glace, il resta très modeste à ce sujet et n'en fit jamais mention à ses amis.
Il supporta les athlètes et en 1967 il mena une collecte de fond pour aider au sponsoring des athlètes américains pour les Jeux Olympiques de 1968, récoltant plus de $30,000. Il joua au tennis après sa retraite jusqu'à ce qu'il subit une opération bypass.
Il est décédé de mort naturelle à l'âge de 95 ans et il fut enterré au cimetière de Lake Forest.
