The family name was always spelled as ”Brackl” in the newspapers, but the correct spelling was ”Brakl”.
His father Norbert was a Vienna-born merchant and his mother Rudolfine was born in Mikulov, today part of the Czech Republic. His parents were of Jewish faith, but Franz later converted to an Evangelical faith.
Franz played his junior hockey in Vienna for WAC Wien and the Jewish club Hakoah Wien. As a player he wore eye-glasses when he played.
He moved to Bucharest in Romania 1932. There he played for Telefon Club Bucureşti between 1933 and 1939 and Rapid Bucureşti 1939/40. He resumed his playing career after WW II and played for Juventus Bucureşti. Together with his older brother Ernst, he worked in Bucharest for the Semperit company.
In 1948 Franz had to leave Bucharest because of the Communists. He first went to Sweden, where his parents and a brother had moved during the war.
The other brother Ernst had fled to Ankara, Turkey and later Haifa (today Israel), back then Palestine. Ernst eventually settled down in South America (Vina del-Mar, Chile). Franz sister Cornelia moved to England.
Franz himself ended up back in Vienna. He married a French woman and worked for a company that dealt with technical parts.
He was fluent in German, Romanian, English and French.
He finished his life in Saint-Nazaire, France, and was the first coach of Nantes ice hockey club.
His three sons Francis [1953-], Christophe [1957-2019] and Edmond [1959-1990] all played hockey in Nantes.

Son nom de famille était toujours épelé "Brackl" dans les journaux, mais l'orthographe correcte était "Brakl".
Son père Norbert était un commerçant né à Vienne et sa mère Rudolfine était née à Mikulov, aujourd'hui en République tchèque. Ses parents étaient de confession juive, mais Franz s'est ultérieurement converti à la foi évangélique.
Franz a joué son hockey junior à Vienne en Autriche, pour le WAC et pour le club juif Hakoah. Il portait des lunettes quand il jouait.
Il est parti à Bucarest en Roumanie en 1932. Il a joué pour le Telefon Club Bucarest entre 1933 et 1939 puis au Rapid Bucarest 1939/40. Il a repris sa carrière de joueur après la Seconde Guerre mondiale pour la Juventus Bucarest. Avec son frère aîné Ernst, il travaillait à Bucarest pour l'entreprise de caoutchouc Semperit qui produisait notamment des pneus de bicyclette.
En 1948 Franz a dû quitter Bucarest à cause des communistes. Il est d'abord allé en Suède, où ses parents et un frère s'étaient installés pendant la guerre.
Le troisième frère Ernst avait fui Ankara en Turquie puis à Haïfa, alors en Palestine et aujourd'hui en Israël. Ernst s'est finalement installé en Amérique du Sud (Vina del-Mar, Chili). Leur sœur Cornelia a déménagé en Angleterre.
Franz est finalement retourné à Vienne, il a épousé une Française et travaillait pour une entreprise de joints en caoutchouc.
Il parlait couramment allemand, roumain, anglais et français.
Il a fini sa vie à Saint-Nazaire (France) et a été le premier entraîneur du Hockey Glace Nantais.
Ses trois fils Francis [1953-], Christophe [1957-2019] et Edmond [1959-1990] ont tous joué au hockey pour Nantes.
