Was seen as a very talented defenseman during his junior years. Was a World Junior Championship All-Star in 1983.
As a former forward he had very good offensive instincts when he was a blueliner, frequently joining the rush. He was also a force on the powerplay.
Scored more than 500 career points in over 900 games. Retired in 2004. Became a hockey coach.
Inducted into the Russian Hockey Hall of Fame.

Considéré comme un brillant espoir au poste de défenseur, il fut élu dans l'équipe-type des championnats du monde junior 1983.
D'abord formé à l'avant, il faisait valoir son expérience à ce poste chaque fois qu'il rejoignait la ligne bleue pour se mêler aux offensives. Également très utile en powerplay.
Plus de 500 points sur environ 900 matches disputés dans six pays différents, dont le Canada pour un bref passage par la NHL. Prit sa retraite en 2004 pour devenir un entraîneur sans succès notable.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey russe.
33 points marqués (8+25) en 57 parties de saison régulière de NHL.
