His paternal grandparents originated from Pennsylvania. Learned to skate in the local rink in Falkirk during the war years.
He scored 190 points (74+116) in 297 games for Falkirk Lions. Was United Kingdom's national team playing coach in 1961. Represented both Scotland and Great Britain. He started out as a forward but shifted to defense later on.
Became a very rugged blueliner who loved to play a bruising style of hockey. One of the hardest working players to be seen anywhere and never backed down from anyone. He retired in the mid 1960s. Was a hockey coach later on.
Inducted into the British Ice Hockey Hall of Fame.

Descendant de grands-parents paternels originaires de Pennsylvanie, il apprit à patiner à Falkirk, sa ville natale en Écosse, pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
190 points (74+116) en 297 parties pour les Falkirk Lions. Nommé entraîneur-joueur de l'équipe nationale du Royaume-Uni pour le Mondial B 1961. Il aussi porté le maillot de l'équipe nationale d'Écosse. D'abord attaquant, il se reconvertit en défense l'expérience venant.
À ce poste, il devint même un joueur brusque, voire brutal, pratiquant un hockey sans concession. Sans doute un des joueurs les plus acharnés de l'histoire du jeu, qui ne se laissait intimider par rien ni personne. Prit sa retraite passé la trentaine, au coeur des années 1960, pour devenir entraîneur.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey britannique.
