He was born in Venezuela while his American father was employed there as an engineer, building power stations. Moved to the United States before his fourth birthday. He spent his childhood in Dayton, Chicago and Orlando, before moving to Erie, Pennsylvania at the age of ten.
Eventually moved to Canada as a teenager to play junior hockey there. Was the first American citizen to be selected in first round of an NHL draft. Didn’t mind throwing his weight around and had both good speed and size. Four time Stanley Cup champion in the 1970s while playing for the Montreal Canadiens.
Retired in 1984. Played a few games during the 1992/93 season in a Californian senior league.
Was an excellent golf player. Got involved in hockey arena management as well as the boat business, owning and operating Back Bay Marine in Newport Beach, CA. Became president of Strong Side Sports, a company which focused on hockey arena and marina management. Served as vice president of Los Angeles Kings Alumni Association.

Né au Venezuela où son père travaillait en tant qu'ingénieur dans l'industrie électrique. La famille fut de retour aux États-Unis avant les quatre ans de Rick. Celui-ci passa son enfance à Dayton, Chicago and Orlando, avant de s'installer à Erie, en Pennsylvanie, à l'âge de dix ans.
Quitta encore adolescent son foyer pour le Canada et son hockey mineur. Cela lui réussit puisqu'il fut le premier citoyen américain à être sélectionné à un premier tour de draft.
Joueur rapide et costaud qui n'hésitait pas y aller franco. Lauréat de quatre Coupes Stanley dans les années 1970 avec les Canadiens.
Prit sa retraite de NHL en 1984. On retrouve sa trace en 1992-1993 dans une ligue californienne où il disputa quelques rencontres.
Excellent joueur de golf, il se recycla dans la gestion de patinoires et le commerce maritime de plaisance, au point de se rendre propriétaire de la Back Bay Marine de Newport Beach, en Californie.
Devint par la suite président de Strong Side Sports, une entreprise spécialisée dans ces métiers. Également vice-président de l'amicale des anciens Los Angeles Kings.
92 points marqués (28+64) en 420 parties de saison régulière de NHL.
