Had a stellar playing career in College. Led the highest scoring line during the 1964/65 NCAA season with Phil Dyer and Jim Mullen. Cunniff and his center Dyer were schoolmates before joining Boston College together.
First player to be elected twice MVP of the Beanpot in 1964 and 1965.
At the 1967 World Championships he sustained a shoulder injury. He later played professional hockey in the WHA.
Retired in 1979 after a last season in the NEHL. Became a respected and successful hockey coach, known for being a great strategist and innovative trainer.
Died of cancer. Inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame.

Très belle carrière en université, où il mena en 1964/65 une prolifique ligne avec Phil Dyer et Jim Mullen. Cunniff et son centre Dyer était camarades d'école avant de rejoindre le Boston College ensemble.
Premier joueur à avoir été élu deux fois MVP du Beanpot en 1964 et 1965.
Sa participation aux Mondiaux 1967 fut abrégée par une blessure à l'épaule. Passé ensuite par la WHA.
Retraité en 1979 après une dernière saison en NEHL. Devenu un entraîneur à succès, stratège renommé et avant-gardiste.
Décédé à 57 ans d'un cancer. Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey américain.
