Smooth, powerful skater, who honed his skills in the early 1960s in a type of specialized summer camps. His skating skills came as a courtesy of a professional figure skater instructor. He was a small but scrappy player who despite his size didn’t mind physical play. If knocked down he just bounced back up again. He was very speedy and backchecked well.
Formed a high scoring line in College with Tony Curran and Keith Bolin. Graduated from University of Minnesota in 1969.
Invited to attend the Detroit Red Wings' training camp 1969, but military obligations forced him to decline. Was on his way to earn a spot on the 1972 US Olympic team, until a shoulder injury put a stop to his playing career.
Went on to work as a salesman for W.W. Grainger Inc. for 22 years. Later moved to Rainy Lake, near International Falls, Minnesota.

Patineur élégant et puissant, qui acquit ce talent au début des années 60 en participant à une sorte de camp d'été spécialement consacré à cela et au cours duquel il fut suivi par un entraîneur de patinage artistique. Petit, Fichuk était surtout obstiné et ne rechignait pas au travail physique malgré sa taille. Son centre de gravité peu élevé lui permettait de se relever vite. Rapide au repli, il était utile des deux côtes de la glace.
Forma une ligne efficace avec Tony Curran et Keith Bolin au cours de son passage par l'Université de Minnesota, dont il sortit diplômé en 1969.
Cette même année, il fut invité à un camp d'entraînement des Red Wings mais ses obligations militaires l'obligèrent à refuser. Fut aussi privé de la chance de jouer les JO 1972 par une blessure à l'épaule qui marqua la fin prématurée de sa carrière.
Prit donc un emploi de commercial pour W.W. Grainger Inc., un poste qu'il conserva 22 ans. S'installa ensuite dans le Minnesota, près d'International Falls.
