Both of his parents were born in Canada. Born in Boston, MA but grew up in Arlington, MA.
He was the youngest of three children and taught himself to skate. First played hockey at age 13.
Big and tough player who captained the Bowdoin College team in 1949-50. Before that he had played in the Greater Boston Interscholastic League for Arlington Arcadians. Played mostly as a left wing but could also play as a defenseman and center.
He won the National U.S. Senior American Hockey Association Championship in 1950.
Was the Bates leading scorer during the 1950/51 season.
Aside from ice hockey he also played football at Bowdoin College. He majored in chemistry from Bowdoin.
Fife graduated from the Harvard Medical School class of 1955.
He then served two years in germany as a U.S. Army captain.
For some years he worked at Harvard's coveted Fifth Surgical Service at Boston City Hospital.
Refereed hockey games later on. Went on to live in Brunswick, ME., where he ran a practice as a general surgeon. Later was a general surgeon in Boston.

Fils de Canadiens, il est né à Boston dans le Massachusetts avant de déménager à Arlington, dans le même État.
Benjamin de trois enfants, il a appris à patiner tout seul et a commencé le hockey à 13 ans.
Joueur robuste et rude, capitaine à 20 ans de l'équipe universitaire du Bowdoin College (1949-1950). Champion national senior américain en 1950.
Les années précédentes, il avait représenté les Arlington Arcadians de la Ligue universitaire de Boston. Devenu occasionnellement arbitre de hockey.
Ailier gauche, on pouvait le retrouver derrière ou au centre tant son profil était polyvalent. Meilleur pointeur des Bates Manufacturers en 1951.
Pratiqua aussi le football américain au Bowdoin College, où il passa son diplôme avec une spécialité en chimie.
Fife a reçu le diplôme de médecine de Harvard en 1955, puis a passé deux années en Allemagne comme capitaine dans l'armée américaine.
Il a ensuite travaillé au très convoité Cinquième Service de Chirurgie de Harvard au Boston City Hospital.
Il s'installa ensuite à Brunswick dans le Maine où il ouvrit un cabinet de chirurgie générale. Revint à Boston pour y pratiquer la même spécialité.
