Regarded as one of the best goaltenders in amateur hockey. Born in Glasgow, Scotland and moved to Winnipeg, MB, Canada with his family at the age of six. He was a workhorse who played many games and was very solid in all aspects of the game.
Was under the suspension by CAHA (Canadian Amateur Hockey Association) and deemed uneligible to play for Great Britain at the 1936 Winter Olympics. On September 16, 1935 the CAHA contacted IIHF president Paul Loicq and informed him about 16 Canadian players who played in Europe that hadn’t recieved transfer permission from CAHA, including Foster. Before the Olympics thirteen out of the sixteen IIHF teams voted that Archer and Foster on the British team should be ineligible to play.
This was later overturned by IIHF president Loicq when he called a meeting to discuss and vote on the matter to let them play in the Olympics only. Foster had an incredible 16 shutouts in 29 World Championship and Olympic games. He was very calm and composed. Played the angles extremely well and was quick.
Passed away of cancer.
Inducted into the British Ice Hockey Hall of Fame.

Considéré comme un des meilleurs gardiens de but amateur de l'entre-deux-guerres, Jimmy Foster est né en Écosse avant de déménager au Canada (à Winnipeg) avec sa famille dès ses six ans. Bourreau de travail, il pouvait accumuler les matches et se rendait indispensable grâce à son arsenal complet.
Il faillit ne jamais avoir de carrière internationale quand sa participation aux JO d'hiver 1936 fut mise en péril par une motion de la CAHA (Canadian Amateur Hockey Association) qui l'estima inéligible pour s'aligner en faveur du Royaume-uni. En septembre 1935 en effet, la CAHA avait informé l'IIHF et son président Paul Loicq que 16 joueurs canadiens étaient sous contrat en Europe sans qu'elle ne les y ait autorisés. Treize adhérents sur les seize de la fédération internationale votèrent en faveur de l'exclusion des JO 1936 de Foster et de son équipier Archer.
Paul Loicq parvint à revenir sur cette décision en réclamant une discussion et un nouveau vote. Finalement, Foster put jouer quatre compétitions internationales au cours desquelles il posta 16 blanchissages en 29 matches. Calme, régulier, il bouchait ses angles avec maestria et bénéficiait d'excellents réflexes.
Mort d'un cancer à 53 ans.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey britannique.
