Came to Germany in 1979 after a fairly successful career in various Canadian junior leagues. He had followed his father's advice to accept Cologne proposal instead of his agent's advice to remain in Philadelphia Flyers camp. When he landed in Germany to sign the contract agreed with KEC, he was welcomed at Frankfurt airport by a "Fritz" sign held by... a Landshut emissary who tried to hijack the rookie. Later on Cologne envoy sent an announcement through airport speakers to find George Fritz. It was too late since he gave his luggage to the first man he had met, who took him to another plane to Munich. Two days later - and after a training in Landshut - he eventually came to Cologne.
26 national team games, 9 points (4+5). Scored a total of 651 points (310+341) in 729 German elite league career games.
First international player in Schwenningen history. His number 22 has been retired by the club.
After his retirement in 1996 he eventually shared his time between Canada and Arizona (6 months each every year). He owns a boat for fishing.

À 20 ans tout juste, après une carrière prometteuse en junior canadien, il suit le conseil paternel de répondre à une proposition de contrat de Cologne plutôt que la recommandation de son agent de rester au camp des Flyers de Philadelphie. Quand il arrive en Allemagne pour signer le contrat sur lequel il s'était entendu avec le KEC, il est accueilli à l'aéroport de Francfort par un panneau "fritz"... brandi en fait par un représentant du club concurrent de Landshut ! Celui-ci a eu vent du recrutement et essaie de détourner le Canadien. À ce moment, l'envoyé de Cologne fait passer une annonce par la sonorisation officielle de l'aéroport pour retrouver George Fritz. Trop tard, ceui-ci a déjà donné ses bagages à l'homme qui l'a accueilli pour un vol en correspondance vers Munich. Malgré la manœuvre - et un entraînement à Landshut - il arrivera bien à Cologne, avec 2 jours de retard.
651 points (310+341) en 729 parties d'élite allemande. 26 sélections en équipe d'Allemagne, 9 points (4+5).
Premier joueur international de l'histoire de Schwenningen. Son numéro 22 a été retiré par le club.
Après sa retraite en 1996, il finit par partager son temps entre 6 mois par an au Canada et 6 mois en Arizona. Il a un bateau avec lequel il pêche.
