His grandfather from his mothers side was from Gothenburg, Sweden.
His greatgrandfather from his fathers side was from Ireland.
Majored in marketing while studying at Boston College.
His older brother Edward Michael Gallagher [1910-1981] was a great athlete as well, playing hockey and being a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Boston Red Sox.
The brother also once served as a secretery to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
John Gallagher served in the Marine Air Group # 31.
He was involved in a serious car accident in Boston on December 17, 1947, but only got cut and lacerations. Won the national championship title in 1949 with Boston College. Co-Founder of the Boston College Pike’s Peak Hockey Club, one of the oldest booster clubs in the country.
Owned an insurance agency.
Worked as a coach at Columbus High School and also as a referee later on.
On December 9, 1966, he suffered a heart attack in the first period while officiating a high school game between Malden High and Christopher Columbus at the old Boston Arena.
He was revived by mouth to mouth resuscitation and then rushed to the Boston City hospital, where he succumbed a half-hour later.

John Gallagher a servi dans le groupe aérien des Marines numéro 31.
Sorti d'un grave accident de voiture le 17 décembre 1947 avec seulement quelques égratignures. Championn national en 1949 avec le Boston College. Co-fondateur du club de hockey Pike’s Peak Boston College, un des plus vieux clubs du pays.
Possédait une agence d’assurances.
A travaillé comme entraîneur à la Columbus High School et a aussi été un arbitre.
Le 9 décembre 1966, il est victime d'un arrêt cardiaque alors qu’il arbitre une partie entre Malden High et Christopher Columbus à l’ancien Boston Arena.
Il est ranimé par un bouche-à-bouche et est transporté rapidement à l’hôpital de Boston où il meurt 30 minutes plus tard.
