His father was born in Dublin, Ireland and came to USA as a 5-year old in 1870. His mother was born in Canada but had Irish parents as well.
Better than the average stickhandler with a hard shot. Not very fast on his skates but had good hockey instincts.
First US-born player in the NHL during the inaugural season 1917/18. Served with the US Navy during WW I. He was also drafted for WW II in 1942.
When he joined Club des Patineurs de Paris in 1921 he became the first ex-NHLer to play club hockey in Europe. He skated circles around the Europeans at the time, scoring an average of six goals per game.
Four years after his initial Olympic experience in 1920 he was supposed to play in Chamonix 1924, but was prevented to go because of business engagements.
First retired in 1927, but made a comeback in Europe 1932 with Stade Français.
Scored a goal per game in his hockey career which totaled over 200 goals.
Geran enjoyed his time in France and after returning from Paris it was said that he brought with him a bit of the „Paris touch“, which included drinking wine to his meals.

Technique de crosse supérieure et tir puissant. Pas très rapide sur ses patins mais de bons instincts pour le hockey.
Ce fut le premier Américain de naissance à jouer en NHL lors de la saison inaugurale 1917/18.
Il a servi dans la marine américaine pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, et a aussi été mobilisé pour la Seconde Guerre mondiale en 1942.
Quand il rejoint le Club des Patineurs de Paris en 1921, il devient le premier ancien joueur de NHL dans un club européen. Il marque près de 6 buts par match.
4 ans après sa première expérience olympique en 1920, il devait participer au JO de 1924 mais n'a pu s’y rendre car il n'a pu trouver personne pour s'occuper de ses affaires en son absence.
Après une première retraite en 1927, il fait un retour en Europe en 1932 avec le Stade Français.
Marque un but par match dans sa carrière avec plus de 200 buts.
Il a apprécié son séjour en France. On disait de lui qu'il ramenait une petite touche de Paris, notamment en buvant du vin à chaque repas.
