Made history when he and Chris Terreri both put water bottles on the top of their nets in a College game on March 16, 1985, the first time both goaltenders in a game had water bottles on their nets, a procedure that is standard today among goaltenders. Soon Bob Foese and Pelle Lindbergh in Philadelphia used it as well.
Named best goaltender in the ECHL in 1988/89. Played in the NHL with the bottom-of-the-table Quebec Nordiques without being able to earn a regular spot in the NHL (2 wins in 23 games and a .829 save percentage). Retired in 1994.
Went on to work as an ice hockey coach in the IHL, AHL, NHL and KHL.
Assistant coach for USA in the 2009 World Championships and 2010 Olympics. Head coach during 2011 World Championships.

Marque l’histoire quand lui et Chris Terreri ont placé des bouteilles d’eau au-dessus de leurs cages dans un match universitaire le 16 mars 1985 ; c’est la première fois que les deux gardiens en avaient une, ce qui est maintenant un standard pour tous les gardiens. Bob Foese et Pelle Lindbergh le firent aussi rapidement à Philadelphie.
Meilleur gardien d'ECHL en 1988/89, il joue ensuite en NHL pour les Nordiques de Québec qui sont à l'époque en fond de cale : il y remporte seulement 2 victoires en 23 parties, avec 82,9% d'arrêts. Il a pris sa retraite en 1994.
Il a entraîné en IHL (où il a fini sa carrière à Atlanta et rencontré sa femme), en AHL (entraîneur de l'année en 2008) puis en NHL : coach principal des New York Islanders de 2008 à novembre 2010 et des Flyers de Philadelphie par intérim de décembre 2018 à avril 2019. Il signe en KHL au Traktor Chelyabinsk en 2026.
Assistant-coach pour les États-Unis aux Mondiaux 2009 et Jeux olympiques 2010 (médaille d'argent). Entraîneur principal lors des Championnats du monde 2011.
