His father was a musician and during one of his trips abroad he bought the young Aleksandr a pair of skates, which was the start of his hockey career.
Physical defenseman who liked to dish out open-ice hits. One of his strongest assets was his low hard shot from the point. His long arms made him useful when battling along the boards. He played more of a Canadian style of hockey than his teammates. He was both strong and graceful at the same time. World Championship All-Star in 1973.
Played 335 league games, scoring 101 points (64+37). Represented Soviet Union 128 times (29 goals). Retired in 1979.
Inducted into the Russian Hockey Hall of Fame.

Sa découverte du hockey est originale : son père musicien, au cours d'une tournée à l'étranger, lui acheta une paire de patins. C'est ainsi que le petit Aleksandr monta sur la glace !
Défenseur très physique, prompt aux mises en échec et réputé pour son puissant tir de la bleue. Sa grande envergure le rendait redoutable le long des balustrades. On l'a compris, il jouait un hockey plus canadien que nature, tout en conservant une certaine élégance de jeu.
Élu en 1973 dans l'équipe-type des championnats du monde. 335 matches de championnat, 101 points (64+37). 128 sélections internationales, 29 buts. Tira sa révérence en 1979.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey russe.
