Started organized hockey at 8. Became captain and star in Beverly high school hockey team before going to play one year with the Montreal Junior Canadiens before coming back to the New England amateur league at 19.
Sent to Vietnam and the Mekong delta in October 1970. His father sent him hockey sticks and pucks to Vietnam and the young Irving was shooting pucks against sand bags in foxholes in front of bewildered Vietnamese villagers. He could leave his military duty when he was invited for a tryout for the US National team in September 1971. It took him some time to get in shape but the coaches didn't cut him early because they knew he could have been sent back to Vietnam.
Extremely hard-working player with a great attitude towards the game that coaches loved.
Only his size worked against him, but his skill level was good, his work ethic was world class.
Scored 591 (269+322) career points in 749 IHL pro games. Retired in 1983. Went on to coach in hockey.
Kept in shape after his playing days were over, and ran in the Boston Marathon 1988 and 1991.

Il a commencé le hockey en club à 8 ans. Capitaine et vedette de l'équipe de hockey du lycée de sa ville natale Beverly avant de partir un an au Québec avec l'équipe junior des Canadiens de Montréal et de revenir à 19 ans dans la ligue amateur de Nouvelle-Angleterre.
Repéré par l'entraîneur américain Jim Logue à un tournoi international mais envoyé pendant la guerre du Vietnam dans le delta du Mékong en octobre 1970. Son père lui envoya des crosses et des palets et le jeune Irving lança des palets contre des sacs de sable devant des villageois vietnamiens interloqués. Il a pu quitter son service militaire quand il a été invité à un essai en équipe nationale en septembre 1971. Celui lui prit un peu de temps pour retrouver sa condition mais les entraîneurs évitèrent de le retrancher de l'effectif au début pour éviter de le renvoyer au Vietnam.
Grand travailleur avec une attitude exemplaire à chaque match, ce que les entraîneurs adoraient.
Seul son gabarit (1m70) jouait contre lui, mais son niveau technique était bon, et son éthique de travail était de classe mondiale.
Auteur de 591 (269+322) points en 749 matchs dans sa carrière pro en IHL, jusqu'à sa retraite en 1983.
Devenu entraîneur de hockey, il conserva sa condition physique et prit le départ du marathon de Boston en 1988 et 1991.
