Played high school hockey for Belmont Hill School. Later played for Boston University where he was an All-East all-Star. Normally played as a defenseman.
Inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame after a very successful college coaching career. Best NCAA coach in 1962.
Worked for the Detroit Red Wings. He was the president of Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL) and also was the General Manager of New England Whalers (WHA). He was inducted in the inaugural World Hockey Association Hall of Fame.
His son David married actress Michelle Pfeiffer and won 10 Emmy’s. David won as a producer for the TV-comedy show "Ally McBeal" and drama series "The Practice". His script was also the basis for the TV-series "L.A. Law". He also wrote the script for the ice hockey movies "Lake Placid" and "Mystery Alaska".

Débute défenseur pendant son adolescence à la Belmont Hill School et à l'Université de Boston, avec laquelle il sera élu dans l'équipe-type universitaire de l'Est.
Sa carrière d'entraîneur universitaire (meilleur coach de NCAA 1962) lui vaudra d'être introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey américain.
Il prendra ensuite fonction dans le hockey pro, devenant directeur général de la franchise des Whalers (New England en WHA, Hartford en NHL), responsable de l'équipe-ferme des Red Wings et président de la franchise des Penguins. Fit partie de la première fournée des Hall of Famers de la WHA.
Son fils David est très connu aussi, mais dans un autre domaine. Époux de Michelle Pfeiffer, il aura produit Ally McBeal et The Practice, des séries télévisées des années 90. Il fut également scénariste d'une autre série, LA Law, et de deux films sur le hockey, Lake Placid et Mystery Alaska. David Kelley a remporté 10 Emmy Awards à ce titre.
