His maternal grandparents hailed from Wabrzezno (Poland). He was born in the Charlottenburg district of Berlin where many German players came from. Very tall player.
Studied at the Czechoslovak border town of Eger (Cheb), and also in Austria. Was at the officer school in Innsbruck and fought in WW I. Studied briefly at the Technische Hochschule in Munich.
First emerged as a hockey player with Zehlendorfer Wespen in 1926 and then only had a relatively brief playing career with Berliner SC. In 1928 he left Germany and moved to Barranquilla, Colombia in South America where he worked with SCADTA (later AVIANCA), also was in Panama, returning in 1937. Was then employed by Lufthansa and by 1939 was their representative and German consul in the African town of Bathurst (today Banjul), British West Gambia.
Became interned in 1940 and on July 2 he was one of 1,216 interned and POW’s on a ship from Liverpool, England to St.John’s in Canada. The ship (Arandora Star) was sunk by a German torpedo. Was one of 586 survivors. He was subsequently shipped to Australia, but because of a mutiny he was disembarked in Capetown, South Africa. Later interned in Isle of Man at Dunluce House, Ramsay, with a group of German VIP-deportees. There he met his future father-in-law, Prof. Dr. Werner Gerlach, pathologist and German Consul General in Reykjavik, Iceland. Gerlach was in the SS and a personal friend of Heinrich Himmler. After two years Wolfgang was released and worked for Bauer & Schaurte (Imbus key inventor) and then later became Lufthansas General Manager for USA and Canada. Was also on their board of directors and had the title of professor.
An incorrect birthdate is also given as January 16, 1898.

Ce joueur très grand pour son époque avait des origines polonaises par ses grand-parents maternels qui vinrent en Allemagne depuis Wabrzezno. Lui-même était issu du quartier de Charlottenburg, à Berlin, dont sortirent de nombreux hockeyeurs de l'époque.
Fait ses études à Eger (aujourd'hui Cheb, en République tchèque), en Autriche à l'école d'officiers d'Innsbruck et à la Haute-école technique de Munich. Sur le front pendant la Première Guerre mondiale.
Apparaît sur les patinoires en 1926 avec les Zehlendorfer Wespen, toujours à Berlin. Rejoint le Berliner SC avec lequel il joue deux ans et arrête le hockey quand il s'installe à Barranquilla, en Colombie, puis à Panama à l'appel de la compagnie aérienne SCADTA (devenue Avianca). Revenu en Allemagne en 1937, il devient un cadre de la Lufthansa qui fait de lui son représentant pour l'ouest africain à Bathurst (Banjul), en Gambie coloniale. Nommé consul pour l'Allemagne dans la zone.
Allemand en territoire britannique, il est fait prisonnier de guerre en juillet 1940 et embarque peu après avec 1215 autres de sa condition sur un bateau, l'Arandora Star, qui doit le mener de Liverpool à Saint-John au Canada. Le navire, battant pavillon britannique, est détruit par une torpille allemande. Kittel fait partie des 586 survivants et on projette de l'envoyer en Australie sur une autre embarcation mais une mutinerie à bord oblige à interrompre le voyage. Débarqué au Cap, Kittel est finalement emprisonné sur l'île de Man au large du Royaume-Uni avec d'autres détenus de marque.
C'est là qu'il rencontre son futur beau-père, Werner Gerlach, un pathologiste qui fut consul du Reich en Islande. Gerlach était un vrai nazi, SS et ami personnel de Heinrich Himmler. Finalement libéré au bout de deux ans, "professeur" Kittel (un titre qu'il recevra peu après) se reycle chez Bauer & Schaurte (l'entreprise qui inventa la clé Allen, célèbre chez Ikea) et retourne à la Lufthansa, dont il intègre le directoire en tant que directeur général pour les opérations en Amérique du Nord.
Sa naissance est parfois située au 16 janvier 1898.
