Both his parents were born in Czechoslovakia and immigrated to USA in 1902. He was born in Hammond, IN, but grew up in Canmore, AB, with his brother and two sisters. According to his daughter, he was born in Whiting, IN on June 29, 1910.
His father died in 1913. Paul learned to skate and play hockey on small ponds around Canmore. Was noted as an avid flyfisher. He moved to Kimberley, BC, in 1931 to work in the local mine. From 1945 he worked as a mine shift boss in Kimberley, BC, until his death of Acute Coronary Ischemia (restriction in blood supplies to tissues).

Fils de Tchécoslovaques qui émigrèrent vers les États-Unis en 1902. Né à Hammond, dans l'Indiana aux USA, il grandit à Canmore, dans l'Alberta au Canada, parmi deux soeurs et un frère. Sa propre fille affirme qu'il est né à Whiting (Indiana) le 29 juin 1910.
Orphelin de père à trois ans, Paul apprend le hockey l'hiver dans la nature autour de Canmore. Expert en pêche à la mouche, il s'installe à Kimberley, en Colombie-Britannique, en 1931, pour travailler à la mine. Devient chef d'équipe dans la même mine en 1945, jusqu'à sa mort à 43 ans d'ischémie coronarienne aiguë.
