The only Finnish athlete to compete both in the Summer and Winter Olympics. He played ice hockey at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo, but also participated in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki as a field hockey player.
Represented Finland 59 times (34+9). Formed a fearsome line in the early 1950s together with Matti Karumaa and Eero Salisma (later Esko Tie). Always kept himself in great shape and was ahead of his time, always careful to keep a correct diet. Was a scoring machine who had 306 (194+112) points in 142 league games.
Official Finnish yearbooks have Kuusela scoring 5 goals in the 1949 World Championships, with controversy surrounding the goalscorers against Belgium.
Retired in 1959. Was a physical education teacher.
Served in WW II as a pilot. He was shot down and was a prisoner of war.
Inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.

Il est le seul athlète finlandais à avoir participé aux JO d'été et d'hiver. S'il a participé au tournoi de hockey sur glace des JO 52 à Oslo, il a aussi défendu à domicile les couleurs de la Finlande en hockey sur gazon lors des JO 52 d'Helsinki.
59 sélections nationales et 43 points (34+9) même si les archivistes finlandais n'arrivent pas à se mettre d'accord sur son nombre de buts inscrits lors du Mondial 1949, sept ou cinq selon les buteurs du match contre la Belgique (pour notre part, nous gardons un total de sept buts).
Formait en sélection une ligne redoutable avec Matti Karumaa et Eero Salisma (bientôt renommé Esko Tie). Kuusela était un excellent athlète, déjà conscient de l'importance de l'entraînement invisible et, fait rare à l'époque, il faisait attention au contenu de ses repas. C'est sur la glace qu'il bâfrait avec 306 points (194+112) en 142 matches de championnat.
Pilote d'avion pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il fut fait prisonnier de guerre après que son appareil fut abattu.
Arrête de jouer en 1959. Il était prof d'éducation physique.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey finlandais.
