He was born in London, England to English parents but moved to Banff, AB at the age of two.
Learned his hockey as a member of Banff school.
In the late 1920s he played in the very competitive Pacific Coast Hockey League.
In 1928/29 when he played for the Victoria Cubs, six of his teammates went on to play in the NHL.
When he played for the Vancouver Lions in 1930/31, seven of his teammates went on to play in the NHL.
He was a teammate with Hall of Famers like Harry Cameron and Snuffy Smith.
He also was a teammate of the nifty Lorne Carr.
He also played with Tarema, Saskatoon and Portland.
At the 1935 World Championships, the Canadian team filed a protest against his egibility after the game vs great Britain, and he wasn’t allowed to dress for any more games, so he promptly retired as a player.
Instead he carved out a splendid career as a referee.
Officated over 2000 games in Britain and Europe from mid 1930s to May 1965.
Twenty six of those were World Championship and Olympic games.
Is inducted into the British Hockey Hall of Fame. Passed away during the spring of 1976.
When he passed away he left almost £ 17000 behind him in his will.

Né à Londres, de parents anglais, il partit à Banff (Alberta, Canada) à l'âge de deux ans. Il apprit le hockey à l'école de Banff.
À la fin des années 1920, il jouait dans la très compétitive Pacific Coast Hockey League.
En 1928/29 alors qu'il jouait pour les Cubs de Victoria, six de ses coéquipiers ont été engagés dans la NHL.
Puis ce fut le cas de sept autres, quand il jouait chez les Lions de Vancouver en 1930/31.
Il fut coéquipier avec des joueurs intronisés au Hall of Game comme Harry Cameron ou Snuffy Smith.
Il fut également partenaire de l'incroyable Lorne Carr.
Il joua également à Tarema, Saskatoon et Portland.
Aux Mondiaux de 1935, la sélection canadienne a porté une réserve concernant son égibilité suite au match contre la Grande-Bretagne, et il ne fut plus autorisé dès lors à rejouer, ce qui mit fin prématurément à sa carrière de joueur.
À la place il connut une splendide carrière d'arbitre.
Il officia durant 2000 rencontres en Grande-Bretagne et à travers l'Europe du milieu des années 1930 jusqu'en mai 1965.
26 matchs fut dans le cadre de Mondiaux ou de Jeux Olympiques.
Intronisé au British Hockey Hall of Fame. Décédé durant le printemps 1976.
Quand il décéda il laissa près de 17000 livres sur son testament.
