His father Giulio worked at the smelter and saved up to build a house and bring his wife Amabile and their daughter to Canada from Italy. Norm attended Central School and Trail-Tadanac High School, but left school at 17 to begin a bricklaying apprenticeship at the smelter.
When Norm was just married at 22, his car went out of the highway north of Las Vegas. His wife was killed and he got face, back and neck injuries.
Played the majority of his career in Trail, led the league in goals in 1961 and was a first-team all-star in 1964/65 (a second-team all-star in 1955/56). He was also a good team player.
He helped Canada win the 1961 World Championships. The team was made up of mostly Trail Smoke Eaters players. Eight of them had played together since pee-wee hockey and knew each other well, they were a very close-knit team.
Won the Allan Cup in 1962 and retired in 1967. He coached the Smoke Eaters from 1969 to 1971.
He launched Norman’s Restaurant (later Cafe Michael) in 1971 and operated it with his wife until 1986 when he went back to the smelter for a few more years before retirement.
His son Tim played 15 NHL games for Vancouver and New Jersey. His daughter Theresa won the heptathlon at the 1980 Pan-American Games.
