Began playing hockey at the age of 13 at his hometown. Later moved to Prague where he studied.
Was a classic centertype, more of a playmaker than scorer.
Good sized center. Fine stickhandler but didn’t have much of a shot.
His family owned an apartment house, night-club and restaurant, all this was taken away by the communists.
Later admitted that when he went to the 1949 World Championships, he was more focused on defecting than winning the gold.
Stayed in Sweden for a while, even playing a friendly game with Hammarby IF, scoring a goal.
He eventually emigrated to USA. Played one season there for University of North Dakota.
Represented Czechoslovakia 3 times (1 goal). Went into business in New York.
Also a very good tennis player, having won the New York State senior championship.
Lived many years in New York City, but later moved to Phoenicia, New York.
He never returned back home to his native land and later said that he never spoke Czech again with anyone, and that he virtually had "lost" the language after so many years.
Marek was also sad that he never got to see any of his old teammates again, and was especially saddened by the fact that one of them, Miroslav Sláma lived in Colorado where he used to go skiing.
He was involved in the fashion and clothing industry.

Il a commencé à jouer au hockey à 13 ans dans sa ville de naissance.
Il rejoint ensuite Prague où il étudia.
Centre classique, plus créateur que marqueur car il n'avait pas un très bon tir. Beau gabarit, bon maniement de palet.
Sa famille gérait un hôtel, une boîte de nuit et un restaurant, qui furent tous saisis par les communistes.
3 sélections avec la Tchécoslovaquie (1 but).
Zdenek a admis que durant les Mondiaux de 1949, il pensait plus à un moyen de désertion qu'à la médaille d'or.
Il resta en Suède, jouant même un match amical avec Hammarby IF et marquant un but. Il émigra finalement aux États-Unis.
Il y joua une dernière saison avec l'Université de Dakota du Nord avant d'entrer dans les affaires à New York.
Également très bon joueur de tennis, ayant remporté le championnat senior de l'État de New York.
Il vécut longtemps à New York City, puis déménagea à Phoenicia.
Il ne rentra pas une seule fois au pays et a avoué avoir perdu la langue tchèque qu'il n'a plus jamais parlé.
Marek fut également triste de n'avoir jamais revu ses anciens coéquipiers, et fut particulièrement attristé du fait que l'un d'entre eux, Miroslav Sláma, vivait dans le Colorado où il avait l'habitude de skier.
Il s'est investi dans la mode et dans l'industrie textile.
