Born in Danville, Pennsylvania but grew up in Edina, Minnesota.
After attending Blake High School, where he was a standout forward that helped win the Independent High School State Tournament in 1964, Markle played at Yale University in the ECHA from 1965-1969.
After college he was invited by the Boston Bruins to attend their NHL-training camp in London, Ontario.
He was the only college student and one of two Americans (together with 1960 Olympian Tommy Williams).
He also had a tryout with NY Islanders. He played pro hockey for a few years.
Markle continued with his passion and played Senior A hockey with the St. Paul Parkers. There he formed a dangerous line with Ron Naslund and Marv Jorde.
He later tried real estate and banking, but it was film that captured his heart.
Even though Peter Markle was a good hockey player, he became more famous as a film director, television director and screenwriter.
He directed episodes of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, NYPD Blue, The X-Files and ER just to name a few.
He also directed movies like Youngblood (which he also wrote), Bat*21 (with Gene Hackman) and Flight 93 (Nominated for an Emmy).
Some of the actors he directed include Gene Hackman, Danny Glover, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Samuel Jackson, Gabriel Byrne, Alec Baldwin, Angelica Huston, Patricia Arquette, David Duchovny, James Caan, Dennis Hopper, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Martin Sheen, Donny Wahlberg, Daryl Hannah, Richard Dean Anderson, Kiefer Sutherland and Lou Gossett Jr.

Né à Danville, en Pennsylvanie mais a grandi à Edina, dans le Minnesota.
Après avoir mené offensivement le Lycée Blake vers la victoire dans le tournoi des lycées indépendants de son État en 1964, Markle joua pour l'Université de Yale de 1965 à 1969.
Après l'université il fut invité par les Bruins de Boston à prendre part à leur camp d'entraînement NHL à London (Ontario).
Il était le seul universitaire, et l'un des deux seuls Américains (avec le sélectionné aux Jeux de 1960 Tommy Williams).
Il fit également un essai pour les Islanders de New York. Il pratiqua le hockey professionnel pendant quelques années.
Markle a poursuivi sa passion dans le hockey senior A avec les Parkers de St. Paul sur une ligne avec Ron Naslund et Marv Jorde.
Il travailla un temps dans l'immobilier et la banque, mais c'est le cinéma qui fit sa carrière.
Car bien que Peter Markle fut un très bon joueur de hockey, il tient sa célébrité de son métier de réalisateur de films, réalisateur pour la télévision director et scénariste.
Il réalisa des épisodes de X-Files, Les Experts, NYPD Blue ou Urgences pour ne donner que quelques exemples.
