Came from a hockey crazy family as he was closely related to the Zenhäusern family.
This included the legendary Aldo [1951-2012], Gerd, Jan and Bruno who all played hockey.
Together with his older brothers Gilbert and Raymond plus younger brother Erich, the four brothers played alongside each other in Sierre.
In the late 1970s as a veteran in Sierre, he played on the first line together with Czech Jaroslav Krupicka (ex-WHA player) and Canadian Bernard Gagnon (NHL draft pick).
In January 1979, the HC Sierre coach, Canadian Norm Beaudin, an ex-NHL’er suspended his captain Nando Mathieu for one game for being "too negative" and not "listening to his coach". Mathieu fired back and called the coach "incompetent".
Mathieu represented Switzerland at all age levels. His older brother Gilbert Mathieu also represented the Swiss national team in the 1970s.
He finished his playing career for the third division team HC Leukergrund (1979-82).

Il provient d'une famille dingue de hockey, en parentalité avec la famille Zenhäusern (oncles, cousins...).
Dans cette famille il y avait le légendaire Aldo [1951-2012], Gerd, Jan et Bruno qui furent tous joueurs de hockey.
Les frères aînés de Nando, Gilbert et Raymond, ainsi que le plus jeune Erich, jouèrent eux-aussi pour Sierre.
En 1978/79 alors qu'il était vétéran à Sierre, il a joué sur la première ligne aux côtés du Tchécoslovaque Jaroslav Krupicka (ex-joueur de WHA) et le Canadien Bernard Gagnon (drafté NHL).
En janvier 1979, l'entraineur canadien du HC Sierre et ex-joueur NHL, Norm Beaudin, retira le C à Nando Mathieu pour un match parce qu'il le trouvait "trop négatif" et qu'il "n'écoutait pas son entraîneur". Mathieu a riposté en rétorquant que son coach était "incompétent".
Mathieu fut international dans toutes les catégories. Son frère aîné Gilbert fut également international dans les années 1970.
Il a fini sa carrière en troisième division pour le HC Leukergrund (1979-82).
