Born as Frederic Melland, but was just called by his middle name "Nevill".
Learned to skate and play hockey at the Manchester rink where his father was a director.
He came from a wealthy family and was the nephew of British Prime Minister (1908-1916) Herbert Asquith.
His mother Blanche du Val was an opera singer and taught singing at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
His father Norman Melland was a Manchester merchant who is said to have introduced lacrosse into England and also was an accomplished ice skater with great speed.
Norman Melland captained the England lacrosse team from 1888 to 1892.
He also wrote two books on the game How to Play Lacrosse and Hints on Lacrosse.
Nevill Melland packed a good hard shot and was an opportunist in the offensive zone.
He was also an accomplished tennis player and competed in Wimbledon.
He graduated from Oxford University in 1926 and used to captain the team.
His first name was often erroneously spelled as "Neville".

Il venait d'une famille très riche et était le neveu du premier ministre britannique (1908-1916) Herbert Asquith.

Nevill Melland possédait un lourd lancer et était opportuniste dans la zone offensive.
Il était aussi un tennisman accompli qui a participé à Wimbledon.
Diplômé à l'Université d'Oxford en 1926 et il était le capitaine de l'équipe de hockey.
Son prénom était souvent écrit par erreur "Neville".
