Older brother of Lauri Mononen. The two brothers played alongside each other for a few years.
Erkki was known for his slippery moves, his creativity and ability to think "outside of the box" in game situations.
His most effective move was to hold off his opponents with his free hand while protecting the puck with his stick hand.
Had strong leadership qualities.
Represented Finland 39 times, scoring 8 points (4+4).
Mononen was the first player selected from Reipas Lahti to Finland's national team.
Often played on a line together with his brother Lauri and Seppo Repo. Retired in 1976.

Frère aîné de Lauri Mononen. Les deux frères ont pratiquement toujours joué ensemble.
Erkki était connu pour ses mouvements glissés, sa créativité et son aptitude à penser de manière déroutante les situations de jeu.
Son mouvement le plus efficace était de maintenir à distance l'adversaire de sa main libre, tout en protégeant le palet avec la crosse de son autre main.
Il avait de grandes qualités de meneur d'hommes.
Il totalise 39 sélections avec la Finlande, ayant inscrit 8 points (4+4).
Mononen était le premier joueur de l'histoire du Reipas Lahti à rejoindre la sélection.
Il était souvent aligné avec son frère Lauri et Seppo Repo. Retraité en 1976.
