He was born in Fillmore, Saskatchewan, but the family lived in Creelman, Saskatchewan, a small farming community about 50 kilometres northeast of Estevan.
His brother Morris played in the NHL and his other brother Darwin in the WHA.
Mott was small but a very acrobatic and athletic goaltender. Stand-up style. Quick glove.
Vern Mott attended Notre Dame College and Colorado College. Two-time Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) All-Star while playing for Brandon University. His team was ranked number one in Canada in 1981 but Mott got injured in the firs game of the national tournament.
Upon graduating he moved to Norway and enjoyed a successful playing career there. He was voted as the best goalie four times.
He had no Norwegian roots in his family, but played long enough in Norway to gain Norwegian citizenship on January 27, 1988.
He went on to represent Norway 12 times.
Retired in the early 1990s. Went on living in Asker, Norway, where he worked as an engineer in the oil insdustry and as a data consultant.

Deux fois All-Star de la Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) dans ses deux anées à l'Université Brandon. Son équipe était classée numéro 1 au Canada en 1981 avant le tournoi final national mais Mott se blessa au premier match.
Diplômé, il rejoignit alors la Norvège pour y jouer au hockey, avec succès. Il fut désigné quatre fois meilleur gardien du championnat.
Il n'a aucune origine norvégienne, mais y a joué assez longtemps pour obtenir la citoyenneté le 27 janvier 1988, peu avant les Jeux olympiques.
Il a continué à vivre en Norvège (à Asker) après sa retraite au début des années 1990. Il a travaillé comme ingénieur dans l'industrie pétrolière puis consultant en données.
