Was an American player. His father was born in New York.
He was employed by Merrimac Chemical Co. in 1917 just before coming to France during WW I in February 1918, staying there until July 1919.
His second French stint was between December 1919 when he married a French girl from Bordeaux (Reine Michel) on August 1920.
Murphy returned to Paris a third time in September 1921. Shortly after that he went on to play hockey in the French capital.
A leader both on and off the ice. In December 1931 he captained the French national team on a couple of occasions.
In December of 1932 he got his player license revoked for a year by the French Ice Hockey Federation when it was revealed that he had played games in Berlin without permission for the wellknown sports promotor Jeff Dickson, thus most likely receiving money.
Worked as an international referee in the 1930s. Also a decent rugby player.
Returned back to USA after having worked for the United States embassies in France and Lithuania.
He later was with the Treasury Department at Washington.

Il retourna aux États-Unis après avoir travaillé dans les ambassades américaines en France et en Lituanie.
Il officia ensuite au département du Trésor à Washington.
