His paternal grandfather was from Finland and immigrated to the United States in 1905.
Played for Michigan State University.
After the USA lost 17-2 to Sweden at the 1963 World Championships, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy phoned the team and asked what he could do to help improve the U.S. hockey program.
Kennedy was a big hockey fan, especially of Harvard hockey.
Tom majored in physical education and worked in that field for many years.
