Versatile player who could play both as a defenseman and as a right winger. A strong-checking forward who seldom made any mistakes. He was solidly built and durable. A hard working player with strong leadership qualities. Not much of a scoring threat, but was used as a pointman on powerplays.
Nicknamed “Sweet Lou from the Soo”. Inducted into the US and IIHF Hockey Hall of Fame.
Retired in 1978. Became an NHL coach and general manager. Grandfather of Vinni Lettieri.

Joueur polyvalent qui pouvait jouer défenseur ou ailier droit. Attaquant solidement bâti et endurant avec de grandes qualités de meneur d'hommes. Il travaillait fort en défense et commettait peu d'erreurs. Il n'était pas un marqueur très menaçant, mais était utilisé à la pointe en avantage numérique.
Surnommé “Sweet Lou from the Soo”, d'après le surnom de sa ville natale. Introduit aux Temples de la renommée du hockey américain et de l'IIHF.
À sa retraite en 1978, il est devenu entraîneur et directeur général des North Stars du Minnesota en NHL et de l'équipe nationale des États-Unis.
