Nickel won ten straight East German league titles with Weißwasser teams until his retirement in 1960.
Went on to coach SG Dynamo Berlin and the East German national team.
Both Hartmut and Wolfgang Nickel (no relation) died within a few months of each other. Wolfgang passed away shortly after his 90th birthday.

Nickel a remporté dix titres consécutifs de champion d'Allemagne de l'Est avec les équipes de Weißwasser jusqu'à sa retraite en 1960.
Il a ensuite entraîné le SG Dynamo Berlin dans les années 1960, et l'équipe d'Allemagne de l'Est en 1977.
Hartmut et Wolfgang Nickel (qui n'ont pas de lien de parenté) sont morts à quelques mois d'intervalle. Wolfgang est décédé peu après son 90e anniversaire.
