Both parents were born in Stockholm. His father worked as a tinsmith.
Versatile athlete who excelled in bandy (represented 5 times), football and hockey.
In football he scored 91 goals for Hammarby and 131 goals in bandy.
His playing style - a physical brand of hockey combined with strong skating - was ahead of its time.
Known for his quick, hard and accurate shot. Technically flawless.
A complete player and one of few Swedish right-wingers who really could measure up with the top right wing forwards in Europe at the time.
Very popular among the fans who loved to see a typical Sigge Öberg sequence, where he just bowled over an opponent, stole the puck and then quickly counterattacked.
Once guarded the nets for a while during the 1927 Swedish league championship semifinals.
Won four league championships with Hammarby IF. Two-time European champion in 1928 and 1932. Olympic silver medalist in 1928.
Represented Sweden 31 times (9 goals) plus another ten games vs club teams etc (7 goals).
Scored 113 league goals. Won the scoring championship in 1931, 1932 and 1934.
In 1929 he scored six goals in a 7-1 win and in 1931 he scored all seven goals in a 7-0 win.
Voted as Swedens best RW of all time in 1932 and the second best of all time in 1946 and 1956.
Found drowned in Hammarbykanalen in an apparent suicide.
Inducted into the Swedish Hockey Hall of Fame.

Son style de jeu - un hockey physique combiné à un patinage solide - était avant-gardiste.
Connu pour son lancer rapide, puissant et précis. Dôté d'une technique impeccable.
Ce joueur complet fut l'un des rares ailiers droits suédois qui pouvaient réellement se mesurer à ce qu'il se faisait de mieux à ce poste en Europe.
Très apprécié du public qui adorait les séquences typiques du jeu de Sigge Öberg, où il renversait un adversaire, lui voler la rondelle puis contre-attaquer rapidement.
Il a même remplacé dans les cages à l'occasion des demi-finales du championnat de Suède en 1927.
Quatre fois champion national avec Hammarby IF. Champion d'Europe 1928 et 1932. Médaillé d'argent olympique en 1928.
31 sélections en équipe nationale (9 buts) auquelles s'ajoutent dix parties non officielles face à des clubs (7 buts).
113 buts en championnat. Meilleur marqueur de la ligue en 1931, 1932 et 1934.
En 1929 il a marqué six buts dans une victoire 7-1, deux ans plus tard il fut buteur sur les sept buts d'une victoire 7-0.
Dans des sondages tenus en 1932, 1946 et 1956, il avait été élu meilleur ailier droit de tous les temps.
Retrouvé noyé dans le canal d'Hammarby, dans ce qui semble être un suicide.
Intronisé au temple de la renommée du hockey suédois.
