Enfin, last but not least, ils ont le naturalisé Tamás Sille, né Slovaque.

At the beginning of October the 66th championship will start in Hungary. The first official championship was announced in 1936 by the Hungarian Ice Hockey League. The centre of the sport was Budapest until the middle of the nineties. During those years only two rural teams could win the gold medal, in 1981 the Székesfehérvári Volán and in 1990 the Jaszberenyi Lehel. In the middle of the nineties the tendency turned back, the two Fejer county 'citadels', namely the Dunaferr - of Dunaújváros - and the Alba Volán - of Székesfehérvár - became the two strongest teams, due to the fact that indoor rinks were completed in both of the towns whereas no ice-rinks have been built in the capital yet. That is why the championship is rather monotonous during the year, as since it can be known in advance which team will play the final, the others can compete only for the third place - the strongest among them is the title-record holder Ferencváros.
In the last season, surprisingly, the Dunaferr came out on top, in spite of the fact that the club, which was supported by the local ironworks, had financial difficulties, therefore it had to let its experienced Slovakian and Ukrainian players go, and they were replaced only by mediocre players, just like the new coach, former Slovakian first-class player Dusan Kapusta. In contrast to them, the Alba Volán - where also a new coach, the former Slovakian representative player Jan Jasko, was on the subs bench - could fortify properly, the squad is made up of Russian junior, Slovakian and Ukrainian players, besides almost three lines of Hungarian international players. In spite of this the Dunaferr won not only the championship but the Hungarian Cup final as well.
In the 2002/2003 season Alba Volán management have set themselves the aim to reconquer the title and reorganized the squad considerably. They parted company with their legionnaires and they were replaced with former Slovakian international center Rusznyak and his two compatriots, left winger Fedor and defender Ondrejcik. Besides them, three Hungarian international players: winger Csaba Kovacs from Notre-Dame (Canada), last year's best scorer Szabolcs Fodor from Ferencváros, and goalkeeper Gergely Bernei. Last but not least, they had the denizen back Tamás Sille of Slovakian birth. They want to win back the title in the championship and to conquer the Hungarian Cup. The fact that the present best Hungarian center, Gábor Ocskay, has had trouble with his knee since last Spring may make their purpose more difficult.
The Dunaferr trusts its squad, which surprisingly won the title. The team of Dunaujvaros has financial difficulties henceforward, their biggest result can be to keep the team together. International center Tamás Dobos arrived into the red-white team from Ferencvaros and Laszló Orso, who is also an international winger, from the Alba Volán. However Slovakian defender Peter Ivicic left the team. Although it has been planned to register 2 foreign players - they are very likely to be Slovakian -, a forward and a defender, the financial possibilities are limited. The strength of the team is the first line - Imre Peterdi, Jaroslav Balaz, Balázs Ladányi - which won the championship final almost alone.
Besides the two professional clubs, four other teams will enter into the competition. One of them is the twenty-five-fold champion Ferencvaros, who has seen better days, and their most serious problem is that they cannot prepare on ice from Spring to Autumn. Indeed there is no indoor rink in the Hungarian capital, therefore ice can be made only if the winter sets in. The green-white team have sold their best players for the sake of their surviving during the past few years, so their squad is mostly made up of juniors and of veterans towards their forties who were international players once. The other club of Budapest,
Újpest, is even in a worse position. They had even stopped their team for some years, but they entered into the championship again in 2000. The lilac-white team also has ice problems, although its indoor rink may be completed with the help of the Hungarian state by the Spring of 2003. The position of Hungarian hockey in the capital can be described well by the fact that the third team of Budapest, the MAC-Nepstadion, which breeds the most juniors, won't take part because of financial reasons. The field is made complete by two rural amateur teams, Gyõri ETO HC and Miskolci Jegesmedvek, which have only hobby players. These two teams enter into the championship only in order to increase the numbers.András Vas
