Hard-nosed and skilled defenseman. Captain of the 1964 Canadian Olympic team.
A versatile athlete who excelled in many sports and was involved in a dozen of them.
Played for Michigan Tech Huskies, winning the NCAA Division I national championships.
Was an WCHA All-Star in each of his three seasons. First Team All-American in 1959/60 and 1961/62. Also chosen to the NCAA All Tournament Teams in 1960 and 1962.
Played one season in Finland and attracted the attention of Father Bauer, who invited the 26-year-old Akervall to try out for the Canadian national team.
He also received an offer from the Detroit Red Wings to play in the NHL, but instead chose to play for Team Canada. Went on to play senior hockey after the Olympics.
Joined the Lakehead University faculty in 1966 as a teacher in the Forestry Department and also served as the Director of Athletics. Instrumental in starting a Physical Education Program there. Retired as a player in 1969. Retired from work in 1997 as the Director of the School of Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism which he had founded. Passed away from a heart attack while playing a game of pick-up hockey.

Défenseur intraitable et doué, capitaine de la sélection olympique canadienne en 1964.
Athlète pluriel, il pratiquait une douzaine de sports différents à un niveau appréciable.
Il a porté la tunique universitaire des Michigan Tech Huskies et a été champion NCAA en 1962. Sélectionné dans l'équipe-type de l'Ouest lors de chacune de ses trois saisons de hockey universitaire, il a aussi fait partie de la première équipe-type du tournoi final en 1960 et en 1962.
Son bref passage d'un an en Finlande a suffi à attirer l'attention du Père Bauer, saint-patron de toutes les équipes olympiques canadiennes. Impressionné par le talent d'Akervall, il lui proposa d'intégrer le Team Canada, ce qu'accepta le jeune homme âgé de 26 ans à l'époque.
Ses qualités n'échappèrent pas non plus à la NHL. Les Red Wings proposèrent d'enrôler l'étudiant multititré du Michigan. Akervall préféra rester avec le Team Canada et se mit au hockey sénior après les JO, tout en poursuivant une carrière universitaire.
À partir de 1966, il enseigna en effet au département des sciences forestières de la Lakehead University, au sein de laquelle il était également directeur des activités sportives. À ce titre, on lui doit la création d'un cursus en éducation physique dans cette même université.
Il mit fin à sa carrière de joueur en 1969, mais pas à ses activités liées au sport. Quand il se retira de la vie active en 1997, il dirigeait une Ecole de formation aux activités de plein air, tourisme et nature. Il jouait aussi, occasionnellement, au hockey. C'est pendant une partie qu'une attaque cardiaque l'emportera. Il avait 62 ans.
