Came from the working class area of ‘Söder’ in Stockholm. Youngest child of ten.
His father was a baker. Grew up next door to his future national and club teammates, brothers Åke ‘Plutten’ Andersson and Stig Emanuel ‘Stickan’ Andersson.
Represented Sweden in three different sports, including ice hockey and football at the 1936 Olympics. Tough and robust defenseman who liked to throw his weight around, his hipchecks were brilliant. Considered too rough by many opponents. Had splendid physique and a very good hockey sense. Adept at breaking up passes and then quickly counterattack.
Inspired his teammates to play better. Played his club hockey for his local team, Hammarby IF, the pride of ‘Söder’, winning five league titles with them. Also played for Djurgårdens IF. Affectionally called ‘Svenne Berka’ by newspapers and fans alike.
Represented Sweden in ice hockey 41 times (5 goals) plus another 14 games (3 goals) against club teams. Also represented Sweden as goaltender in football on 35 occasions and Bandy (1 B-game). Further on he played at the elite level in Handball and Bowling. Also an excellent table tennis player.
Known as a prankster with a great sense of humour. A laugh was never far away while being around him.
After his retirement as a player he coached Hammarby IF (1946-55) and the Swedish national team (1946-49).
Had a car accident on December 3, 1955 and became confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
Voted as the best Swedish right defenseman ever in voting 1946, 1950 and 1956. Inducted into the Swedish and IIHF Hall of Fame.

Son père était boulanger. Il a grandi avec pour voisins ses futurs coéquipiers de club et de sélection, les frères Åke "Plutten" Andersson et Stig Emanuel "Stickan" Andersson.
Il a représenté la Suède dans trois sports différents, notamment le hockey sur glace et le football aux jeux olympiques de 1936. Défenseur rugueux et robuste qui aimait faire parler son physique, ses mises en échec étaient brillantes. Considéré comme trop brutal par de nombreux adversaires. Il possédait un physique parfait pour la pratique et un très bon sens du hockey. Il appréciait intercepter des passes puis contre-attaquer rapidement.
Il inspirait ses coéquipiers à mieux jouer. Il a joué au hockey pour le club local, Hammarby IF, la fierté de "Söder", remportant cinq championnats avec l'équipe. Il a également joué pour Djurgårdens IF. Il était appelé "Svenne Berka" par les journaux et les fans.
Internation suédois en hockey sur glace 41 fois (5 buts) et 14 autres matchs (3 buts) contre des clubs. Il fut également international suédois en football (au poste de gardien) à 35 occasions et au Bandy (1 match en équipe nationale B). Plus tard il joua à un niveau élite au handball et au bowling. Également un très bon joueur de tennis de table.
Connu comme farceur avec un grand sens de l'humour. Le rire n'était jamais loin pour qui l'entourait.
Après sa carrière de joueur il entraîna Hammarby IF (1946-55) et la sélection nationale (1946-49).
Il eut un accident de voiture le 3 décembre 1955 et fut contraint à se déplacer en chaise roulante le reste de sa vie.
Désigné meilleur défenseur droit suédois de l'histoire dans des votes de 1946, 1950 et 1956. Intronisé au Hall of Fame suédois et de l'IIHF.
